The city of Bilbao is the capital of Vizcaya which is a province in the Basque Country. The city’s home is on the banks of the Nervión, a tidal river; it boasts a mild and pleasant climate with temperatures generally remaining above freezing during the winter months and not climbing above 35°C throughout the summer months.
Bilbao has proved to be relatively untouchable throughout the years and has remained unscathed by commercialization. The city has plenty to offer including the historic Catedral de Santiago which is in excess of 700 years old with its beautiful Gothic style of architecture it once set the scene for numerous medieval markets. Take a stroll down Casco Viejo and explore the ‘old part’ of the city, here you will discover quaint cobbled streets and authentically ancient crumbling buildings.
The Casco Viejo is known for the Seven Streets area which houses several bars and fine restaurants, visitors will also revel in the delightful array of shops stocked high with quirky gifts and souvenirs.
If you would like to gain a bird’s eye view of the city take a ride on the old railway and make your way 226 metres up the Artxanda Hill to its summit where you can enjoy the breathtaking, panoramic scene of Bilbao. There are numerous restaurants and bars at the top where you can savour a refreshing drink and a tasty meal.
