Merida is a Roman city and one which boasts the largest collection of important Roman monuments throughout all the cities in Spain and the best preserved Roman ruins in Europe.
The Roman influence is reflected in the city’s attractions including the Roman Theatre which was constructed in 18 BC, during the summer months of June and July you will find the complex stages plays for visitors. There are several majestic stone statues within the theatre grounds. The Roman Bridge (Puente Romano) is worth seeing as it consists of 64 impressive granite arches; today it is a footbridge spanning the beautiful Guadiana River.
Cornalvo Dam is a very peaceful location; it is a gravity dam which dates back to the 1st or 2nd century AD. The earth dam which has an attractive stone clad water face is still a working dam.
The Roman Temple was founded in 25 BC and is a fascinating archaeological site and includes the Temple of Diana which was built from local granite.
Merida is a quiet city, absent of the large crowds of tourists. The food is tasty with a wide choice of restaurants depending on your appetite; the Restaurante Rafael II serves some delicious dishes of various roasted meats. If you are after a lighter snack then try the Casa Benito where you will find tasty tapas on the bar menu.
